You Ain't Doing Enough

The Truth About Growth and Balance

Have you ever had that feeling that you’re not doing enough?

You may not know exactly what I mean, so let me explain.

We all have goals. Those goals vary. Simply put, no matter what they are, there are steps to take to get there — some sacrifices to make, some relationships to cut off, new habits to build, and old ones to let go of. That’s all a part of the process. That’s the price of chasing progress.

Now pause for a second and think about YOUR goals. Visualize them clearly. Then ask yourself this:

Am I doing enough?

That question haunts me more than I care to admit. If I’m lucky, I can go a few days—maybe — but then it creeps in. Even when I’ve been putting in “work.”  Even when I’ve clocked in the hours.

(By “work” I mean those steps and actions necessary to achieve the goal in mind.)

Take writing, for example. I could write for 2–3 hours a day, every day, and still wonder:

Did I write enough?
Am I improving?
Should I edit more?
Am I choosing the right pieces to share?
How can I optimize my writing flow?

All of those fall under one banner: Am I doing enough?

This doesn’t just stop at writing. It follows me into every other corner of my life.  If I have a goal I’m keen on achieving it rears its head again.

I want to make more money — so I wonder if I’m working hard enough, saving enough, investing wisely, leveling up my skills, or negotiating better and with intention.

I want to become a better basketball player — so I train, study film, eat clean, supplement properly, recover smart, and still, I ask myself if I’m getting up enough shots, using the right form, playing and training the right way, or sleeping enough to rebuild.

That voice doesn’t go away. Over the years, I’ve stopped trying to silence it. Instead, I’ve learned to live with it. I do this because the answer I’ve come to accept is this:

Yes… and no.

Let me explain.

Life is all about balance. Everything — your energy, your effort, your relationships, your goals — they all operate on a sliding scale. You can be doing enough for where you are now, and still not doing enough to get to where you want to be. That paradox is real and actually it’s quite necessary.

So yes, you’re doing enough. You’re moving forward, showing up, putting in the reps.
Also no, you’re not doing nearly enough. Keep in mind that the next level of you requires a new version of you. More disciplined. More consistent. More intentional.

That’s the tension you have to live in — not just for success, but for peace as well.

You need to accept that there’s always more to do. You need to write down the goal. Build the game plan. Execute with everything you’ve got. No shortcuts. No sitting on your a** waiting for it to manifest. Progress is earned.

ANDDDDDDDDDDD — and this is crucial — you also need to know when to chill.

Not chill as in do nothing — not chill as in breaking promises to yourself — but chill as in rest, reflect, and reset. Burnout is real. So is overthinking. If you don’t let yourself breathe, you’ll drown in the pressure.

The balance I’m talking about is this:

Be content, but not satisfied.
Be grateful for what you have, while staying hungry to grow.

This idea or concept doesn’t just apply to work, sports, or money. It’s true in all aspects of life. It’s true in relationships too. You can be in a beautiful partnership — aligned, thriving — and still look for ways to love deeper, communicate better, support more fully. There’s always another level.

So when that question — “Am I doing enough?” — pops up again (and it will), remember this:

If you’re committed to the process and grounded in gratitude while reaching for better, you already have your answer.  I truly believe that as long as you’re happy with what you have — genuinely happy and content, while having a healthy drive to be and do better — knowing that there’s always room for improvement, I think you would have found the answer to the question “am I doing enough?”
