The word of the day, well the word of today’s newsletter is “HYPERSPECIALTY.”
In our pursuit of progress and success, we talk a lot about consistency, discipline, and focus. Intertwined with all that, there’s a quiet cheat code. Something to give you a little extra umph.
It’s not just what you do.
It’s how specific you’re willing to get about what you do best.
At the end of the day, it all boils down to how good we are at whatever the vehicle we choose for our success (our craft, our career, our business, our game). However, once we pick that vehicle, we can’t stay surface level. We have to drill down, zoom in, and get insanely good at a very specific slice of it.
That’s where the exponential growth lives.
The Power of Going Deep, Not Wide
Take something we all understand: professional sports.
At the highest level, nobody is just “good at basketball” or “good at football.” Players are known for something hyper-specific:
The lockdown defender who takes the toughest matchup every night.
The point guard who never turns the ball over and controls the tempo.
The sharpshooter who stretches the floor and changes the geometry of the game.
The cerebral QB who knows, reads, and feels the game better than anyone else.
The kicker, who can consistently hit field goals for 50+ yards out.
That hyperspecialty is what gets them paid, keeps them relevant, and makes them hard to replace.
The same thing happens off the court:
From looking for a job to jobs finding you.
When you’re just “a hard worker,” you blend in. When you’re the person who’s elite at simplifying complex data for non-technical teams? People start sending your name around. From hunting for opportunities to being the obvious choice.
The more specific and proven your lane is, the less convincing you have to do. Your work speaks first.
Let’s use us as an example.
We don’t write about “life” in general. We don’t talk to “everyone.”
We talk to millennials — specifically OG Millennials who care about:
Progress, not perfection
Focus over fake busyness
Building real, long-term freedom (money, time, peace)
Could these ideas help other generations? Of course they can, but it’s the specificity that makes this newsletter feel like home.
You’re not reading “random motivation.”
You’re reading something written for you, in your season of life, with your pressures and possibilities in mind.
That’s the power of hyperspecialty.
How to Find Your Hyperspecialty
We don’t need to reinvent ourselves overnight. We just need to go one layer deeper than where we are now.
Here’s a simple way to start:
Name your lane.
Not “I’m in finance,” but:
“I help busy professionals create simple, automated money systems so they can actually enjoy their lives.”
Not “I’m a trainer,” but:
“I help hoopers build durable bodies that keep them healthy through long seasons.”Pick your person.
Who are you really for?
First-time founders? Remote workers? Hoopers overseas? Millennial moms? Once you define your person, your skill sharpens because you stop trying to be everything to everybody.Own your one thing publicly (this is the hardest part, for me at least).
Talk about it. Post about it. Study it. Share your reps. The more you show up around that one thing, the more people mentally tag you as the person for it.
Over time, hyperspecialty quietly shifts your life:
From chasing gigs to getting referrals
From begging for attention to becoming the go-to
From “I hope this works” to “This is what I do”
Be so good AND so specific that when someone needs that one thing, your name is the only one that comes to mind.
