Work. Texts. Notifications. Content. Emails. Ideas. Deadlines. Social media.

Everything is competing for attention at the same time.

The result is this constant digital whiplash where you’re present enough to respond AND just distracted enough to never fully lock in.

The Problem

I don’t think we (OG Millennials) are lazy or incapable.  I think we’re just mentally overloaded.

We always trying to:

  • Work while checking messages.

  • Consume while creating.

  • Answer emails while thinking about something else.

  • Switch between goals, apps, and priorities all day.

It creates this illusion of productivity, while destroying the presence of depth and substance. It can even delude you into thinking you’re moving forward meanwhile you’re just running in place.

The Hidden Cost

The price we pay for having so many tabs open at the same time is:

  • Shallow thinking

  • Unfinished work

  • Reactive behavior

  • Slower execution

  • Mental fatigue

Those aren’t even the worst parts of the price we pay for this problem.  The underlying cost of all this is that while going through it, it also gives the illusion of productivity.  It makes you feel as if were productive all day.

The Modern Reality

It doesn’t help that we also live in a microwave society/era. Immediate action and responsiveness is constantly being rewarded.

Fast replies.
Constant availability.
Always being connected.

However, I’m noticing that true work that’s meaningful and moves the needle usually requires sustained attention.

Depth needs continuity.  Every mental tab that’s open drains your energy. Not all at once but slowly and quietly like a slow leak in your tire.

The Solution: Find The Balance

This isn’t:

  • “disconnect from everything,”

  • “never multitask,”

  • or “go off-grid.”

It’s recognizing that:

  • attention is limited,

  • focus has recovery time,

  • and too much mental switching creates friction.

At the very least we want to be aware of these things and then work on putting guardrails in place to protect that focus.  Set up systems to keep ourselves more locked in on a task, goal, or detail for an extended period of time.

Give ourselves a real chance of making a difference in whatever our endeavor is.

Closing

You don’t lose clarity all at once.
You lose it one small interruption at a time.

In a world built on distraction, the ability to stay mentally locked in has quietly become an advantage. Low key a superpower.
